Frequently asked questions.

~ How long will it take to reach my goal with my dog?

This depends entirely on how much you are willing to put in to your training plan with your trainer’s guidance. If there is no compliance with recommendations, then progress is unlikely to occur. Any trainer who gives you a specific timeframe of guaranteed results is not taking into consideration different learning capabilities of the individual dog, as well as the time commitment from the human end of the leash. So get involved, ask questions, set up a training plan under the guidance of a qualified trainer, and you will be on your way to building your relationship with your dog and reaching your goals!

~ Why can’t you train my dog for me?

The main advantage you get from training and helping your own dog is that your relationship with them grows. Trust and understanding is extremely important in living happily with our canine companions. You certainly will be out of the loop if your dog goes away with a trainer for a chunk of time. What methods are they using? How will the skills and behaviors transfer when the dog is back home? You learning more about your own dog and how to support them is the best possible option, and will come in handy for the rest of their life and any other dogs that come into your life!

~ Can you guarantee results?

Honestly, anyone who is making guarantees immediately throws up a red flag for me. This usually means that they are operating with an outdated method that is very black and white and not individualized or nuanced enough, or even using science-based information based in today’s ethics. To guarantee fast results usually means to cut corners and inevitably do more damage in the long run. At the very east it will damage your relationship with your dog. The first thing I would do when looking for a trainer is to look for qualifications and credentials. Make sure you are always comfortable, and aware, of the methods they use.

~ What qualifications and credentials do you have?

I encourage you to go to the main “About” page of this website for my detailed bio. However, if you have more detailed questions for me after reading the bio, then feel free to email me using the email listed below.

~ What service is right for me: a group class or an individual consultation?

Traditionally the only option that was available was group classes. Often they had 6 or even up to 10 dogs per class. As the field of dog training and behavior knowledge has grown we have learned how to better help clients with their dogs. We have learned that dogs are individuals that often need nuanced or sometimes complex approaches. Teaching skills like “sit” or “stay” will not help a dog that has behavior issues such as reactivity, separation anxiety, guarding behavior, fear, or aggression. So the best possible option is to get individualized help from a qualified trainer—especially one who specializes in behaviors.
